On Saturday, November 17 the second Annual Lego Contest was held at the Cambrian Heights Community Hall. Thanks to Nancy Else and her volunteers there were 36 entries and two displays on exhibition over the day. An estimated 75 attendees viewed the entries. They included remote control cars, windmills, farms, space stations, microscopes and Lord of the Rings creations. In addition, there were two professional displays of a Lego City and Star Wars. Most of the contestants were in the 7-8 year old category. Prizes were awarded and the Lego Store provided bags and magazines for everyone. Planning has already started towards expanding this event in November of next year. Pictures from the event are shown below.

Dog Park Closure Update September 17, 2018
On September 14, the City Planning Department informed community residents that Calgary Parks had withdrawn their Re-Designation Application DL2018-0062 converting the Community’s existing Reserve (S-SPR) Park land bounded by 10th Street and 32nd Avenue into S-CRI (Special Purpose – City and Regional Infrastructure) classification thereby allowing an expansion of the Queen’s Park Cemetery (“QPC”) onto these lands.
These lands are currently being used as a Dog Park and have been part of the Community since its inception in 1956. We wish to thank all those residents who filled objections and/or attended the two Open Houses sponsored by the City to express their opposition. We also wish to thank Councillor Chu for his help and Calgary Parks for responding to this overwhelming opposition by withdrawing their Application.
Community Cleanup 2018 was a Success!
On September 9th. the Community hosted another successful Community Cleanup for yard waste, metal recycling, household waste and electrical appliances, tires and reusable clothing.
None of this would have been possible without the organizational leadership of community resident Gary Wilson and his volunteers.
The Community appreciates the efforts that went into our third year of this event. If you would like to get involved in future events of this type please let us know at cambrianheights@gmail.com

Message from Calgary City Parks – Open Houses
We have received the following letter from the City of Calgary:
“Dear Resident,
This letter is to inform you of some proposed changes in your area.
The Queen’s Park Cemetery has been serving Calgarians for nearly 80 years, and it is close to capacity. Queen’s Park is currently the only active City-operated cemetery offering burial options for Calgarians in the northern quadrants.
Calgary Parks has been working to secure new cemetery space for some time. This has included pursuing opportunities to locate a new cemetery in the new Southeast Cemetery, which will open in the next few years.
To continue offering adequate burial space for Calgarians, Calgary Parks is proposing to expand the Queen’s Park Cemetery into the south-west corner of the site, currently used as an off-leash area. This involves several steps, including going through a formal land use re-designation process.
We would like to work with the community to find alternative or improved off-leash space nearby. We have identified several options, see map below.
Upcoming engagement opportunities
The City would like to continue discussions with the community and residents near to proposed off leash sites. Specifically, we’re looking to:
- Discuss proposed alternative sites for off-leash areas in the community.
- Share more information about the land use application process for the proposed cemetery expansion
You are invited to attend one of two drop-in engagement sessions:
Thursday, April 26, 6-8 pm
Highwood Community Hall
16 Harlow Avenue NW
Wednesday, May 9, 6-8 pm
Highwood Community Hall
16 Harlow Avenue NW
You can also learn more and provide feedback online through The City’s Engage site from April 23 – May 16 at engage.calgary.ca/queenspark
You will be able to provide further comments through the land use application process between April 26 – May 23 through the PD Maps site, calgary.ca/QueensPark.
For more details about the project, visit calgary.ca/offleashprojects, or contact 311.”
