We have watched the active use of our two outdoor ice rinks and look forward to more people enjoying skating 

over the next two months. 

We thank our volunteers for their tireless work in maintaining the excellence of the ice surfaces. We encourage all users to respect each other and utilize the garbage bins. By the reading of this report our January 29 Polar party will have occurred. This annually provides free skate usage for new ice skaters and activities to introduce and encourage outdoor winter activities.

We have partnered with Rosemont Community for our annual Spring Cleanup event. Dates and support for this event will be determined by the City of Calgary this month so watch our website (cambrianheightscommunity.com) for timing and details.

Our new Social Committee has been formed to address the continuation of existing social events as well as developing new programs to involve all elements of our community. The first new event will be a St. Patrick Ceilidh Dance where you can learn the Irish/Scottish folk music dance steps while enjoying refreshments and snacks over the evening.This will be held March 18 at the Community Hall. Ticket information is available on our website. If you would like to become involved with our social activities please contact the committee at social@cambrianheightscommunity.com .

We have operated a community garden for a number of years. We currently have a few open garden beds. If you are interested in reviewing an opportunity to grow your own vegetables this summer please contact us at cambrianheights@gmail.com for more information.

We have been awarded Casino dates of April 17 and 18 in 2023. Casino proceeds allow the Association to remain financially viable and provide services and facilities to the community. We need volunteers for those two nights to work a shift at the Pure Casino Calgary as well as organizational help in coordinating the volunteers over the two days. No experience is required. Come and enjoy a hot meal, meet fellow residents and support your community. Transportation will be provided to and from the casino location if required. We have updated our website and will be making changes over the coming months to improve its usability. We encourage all residents to review the website for planning and development issues, past history of the community, annual financial statements and upcoming social activities or issues of relevance to the Community. On planning and development issues, residents should utilize the City 311 line or contact directly the City File Manager on applications where you feel such development will have a detrimental impact. The Community Association has no special position in regards to these applications, but does generally comment on non contextual applications. Thus all offsetting Owners to any such development should make their objections known directly to impact the approval process.

As always, we continue to invite residents to become involved in community issues and activities by volunteering some time as either a Board member or volunteer for specific activities. We currently are in need of a volunteer to replace our Treasurer who is retiring this year. To discuss this volunteer opportunity or if you have general questions or comments please feel free to contact any of the Directors. Cambrian Heights has a dedicated but small group of volunteers trying to make your community safe, vigilant towards new developments and providing programs such as Fitness and Yoga while engaging residents with social events. But we continue to need help. Consider at minimum registering your email address on our website to gain early access to upcoming programs, social events and issues of importance to the community.

We begin a new year with enthusiasm and the addition of new volunteer residents who hope to introduce additional social and educational programs in 2023. We are starting with our annual  Polar Party scheduled for January 28. Thanks to KidSports we will be providing free skates and helmets for children and adults as well as a fire pit and hot chocolate and cookies for warmth. By the publication of this Newsletter, the Calgary Stampede will have come and gone. Many of you will also be returning from vacations as the new school year begins. We hope everyone had a summer worth celebrating after two years of pandemic turmoil.

Our Annual General Meeting was held on June 28 to vote on the Board of Directors for the 2022-23 term. Both MLA Jeremy Nixon and Councillor Sean Chu attended. After the formal part of the meeting, a spirited discussion took place—focused on health issues, community traffic concerns and City of Calgary budgetary directions. A reception followed the meeting, which was conducive to individual discussions on residents’ concerns and future community programming.

On July 16, the car show, Die Volksmesse 2022, was held at the community centre and was sponsored by Bugs, Bunnies and Buses (bugsbunniesandbuses.com). This was our first such hosting and at the writing of this note, I can only hope the weather cooperated, and it provided a unique Saturday Stampede diversion.

We are planning to start the fall program with an afternoon free outdoor family music concert and food event on Saturday, September 17. Once again, the Gunn Blues Band, who are rapidly attaining national recognition, will be performing. Bring your lawn chairs or picnic blankets and relax on the lawn behind the hall. We will have a food truck and provide vouchers for residents. Mark the date on your calendar.

Our Fitness and Yoga programs will be starting up again in September. We refer you to our website for further details on these two long-running programs. Consider registering your email address on our website to gain early access to upcoming programs, social events and issues of importance to the community.

We have also initiated a project to paint a mural on the Community Hall wall facing our parking lot. We had hoped to publish the final design in this issue, but that design work has not been completed at the publication deadline. Once decided, we will publish a preview on our website and social media outlets. The City of Calgary supports this effort with a 50% grant under their Inspiring Neighbourhood Grants program. We thank them for this support.

Some of you may have noticed our new sign Board in front of the Community Hall. It was installed in mid-June and, after some minor modifications, is in full service to advertise events and programs. Its new lighting will be very noticeable once our summer days begin to shorten.

The Board of your community association continues to support involvement in future development plans for Cambrian Heights plus activities that support safety, personal development and social interaction. We are supporting a recent initiative by the Calgary Police Service to establish a Community Watch Program. This is primarily an informational program on crime prevention. We are setting up a committee to pursue this joint program. More information will be provided through our website and social media platforms in the future, outlining how you will be able to get involved or access details.

With the advent of summer and vacations, the activity at our hall switches towards weddings, celebrations and summer camps. This year we will be supporting kids with disabilities camp put on by Between Friends. This will run from July 4 through August 26. This camp will utilize the hall facilities over the summer while the Edelweiss Preparatory School goes on summer recess. Our Fitness and Yoga programs will be suspended over the two summer months and start back up in September. Watch our website for details.

We hosted our Southern France Wine Tasting Event on May 28 and had a good turnout to enjoy wines and their detailed vintage descriptions by Highlander Wine and Spirits supported by excellent charcuterie boards provided by Springbank Cheese. Dave Thomas and his crew of Barb, Wendy and Lori are to be congratulated on this great event. This marked a return of activities to the community hall after nearly two years of COVID shutdown.

We have all noticed an increase in development activity in Cambrian Heights. With the resignation of three of our Board members this year anyone interested in a role in the development of our community should consider joining our Planning Committee or perhaps the Board of Directors. It is a great way to help shape the nature of Cambrian Heights in the future. We are also looking for someone interested in helping coordinate our social programs. With the Community Hall back to active usage we have been busy planning and developing programs and events. We have added music lessons once a week as an introductory course and are continuing with our Fitness and Yoga programs. We hosted our first-ever Bike Day on May 7 where volunteers serviced over 30 children’s bikes for free at the community hall grounds. Activities for the kids with their bikes also involved safety instructions and an agility course. We thank Spencer Cutten and other resident volunteers for this idea and their dedication towards servicing the bikes during the day.

At the writing of this report, we are excited for the return of our Wine Tasting Events at the scheduled May 28 tasting of southern France wines with Highlander Wine and Spirits providing the expert commentary. We hope you had an opportunity to attend and enjoy this event.

Members of the Calgary Police Service in District 3 have created a Facebook and Twitter page to keep community residents connected by sharing positive stories and community concerns as well as crime trends that police are seeing arise in District 3. We encourage residents to follow this Facebook and Twitter page as another resource to receive information on types of crime within your community.

We encourage residents to share their ideas to improve usability and help preserve the parks within our community. This is particularly important as developments that increase population density increase within the community.

We have all noticed an increase in development activity in Cambrian Heights. We encourage all owners planning a new build to reference our website for the document “Lessons Learned” and discuss design aspects with your neighbours or explore conversation with the Community Planning Committee to avoid conflicts in the development process. With the resignation of three of our Board members this year any-one interested in a role in the development of our community should consider joining our Planning Committee or perhaps the Board of Directors. It is a great way to help shape the nature of Cambrian Heights in the future as well as monthly social activities. Unfortunately, we were unable to host a Community Cleanup this year but plan for its return next year. However, the community cleanups throughout Calgary are open to anyone and are free. While the 2022 schedule has not been published by the City at this point, we encourage checking the City website (calgary.ca) for the Cleanup schedule of neighbouring communities.

We also encourage anyone interested in playing a role in the development of our community to consider joining our Planning Committee. Please contact the undersigned for further information.

We continue to encourage all residents of Cambrian Heights to provide feedback and ideas to us identifying what type of programs and activities you would like to see for our community. As of March 1, the Community Hall is open for rentals, programs, and events. We of course will continue to monitor Provincial and City health guidelines should there be any future changes. We also will continue to sanitize after any programs, rentals, or events until we witness further declines in hospitalizations and the spread of any Covid variants.

As a result, our Yoga Program will return to the hall every Wednesday starting April 6 as will our Fitness program returning every Monday evening starting April 4. Details for attending both programs are found in this month’s newsletter or on our website (www.cambrianheightscommunity.com).

The Community Association is working on a number of events over 2022 as we emerge from the health restrictions initiated in March 2020. We are planning a southern France wine tasting evening on Saturday, May 28. A firm commitment to this event will be made in early April with tickets going on sale through our website. Details will be provided on the website, in the May newsletter as well as our Facebook page, and an email to those who have registered to receive community announcements. In addition, we have scheduled our Annual General Meeting for June 28 at the Community Hall. We hope to host this event with guests and a social reception to explore issues important to the residents of Cambrian Heights. Put this on your calendar and contribute to the discussion that evening.

This summer we will once again put on an outdoor concert on the community grounds. We are trying to organize this concert in association with a fall family community barbecue for the afternoon of September 17. For this event, we need volunteers to help plan and run the event and if you are available please contact us at cambrianheights@gmail.com to discuss your involvement. Events such as these need community participation to be truly successful.

We encourage all pet owners to pick up after their animals and to help preserve the parks within our community by disposing of refuse that was left behind as the snow melts and temperatures increase. This is particularly important in the school and playground recreational areas as well as our Off-Leash parks.
