On January 14 we hosted an introductory Cross Country Skiing course in association with theFoothills Nordic Club. The event was very successful supported by excellent snow conditions and first rate instructors. The following Saturday, January 21 we also provided residents with a Nordic Winter Walking introduction session. The snowshoeing course had to be postponed until February 11. Our annual free Polar Party at the Hall was held on Saturday, January 28. We hope you and your children were able to attend one, two or all of these events. The Polar Party has grown in size every year and this year was no exception. Between 80 – 100 participants enjoyed this year’s warm weather and winter activities. As in the past, the community volunteers with the help of City of Calgary employees offered free rental skates, helmets, a fire pit plus games, treats and hot chocolate for all ages. We wish to thank our volunteers who organized and made these events successful under the direction of our Social Director, Jodi Dixon. The remaining events in the first quarter of the year will be a Family Games and Pub Night February 11 and a Wine Tasting in March. Both of these events were initiated last year and we are looking forward to new participants this year to add to the attendees from last year. Please check our website for details of these events including times and entrance fees. As is our custom, members of the Community Association will pay a lower entrance fee for such events.
Of course, the ice rinks will be maintained throughout the winter for all to access. With two sheets of ice and the sustained winter weather, the rinks have been well utilized. Should you wish to help out the current rink volunteers this year or next please contact Scott Jacobson at 403-771-9755.
As we have previously discussed in these monthly messages our Planning Committee continues to be actively monitoring the issuance of Development Permits (“DP’s”) by the City in our community. This activity covers the gauntlet from secondary suites in RC-1 neighbourhoods to best guidelines for maintaining the identity of our community with growth and densification, to long-term transportation issues like the Green Line LRT. Everyone should remain vigilant as to development on their streets. We anticipate an increase in activity through 2017 and can provide information and assistance should an application be made for a new house construction on your street. We continue to use a Facebook page to help communications and stimulate informational sharing and discussion amongst residents of the Community. It is under “Groups” with an address of “cambrianheightscommunity”. Please register for the Group and join this conversational page and share your thoughts and insights about where you live. One of our volunteers will also update any news of interest to the community.
As a reminder, your 2017 membership dues are now payable. We are maintaining our fee schedule costs for the year to encourage your renewal. The easiest way to renew or join is through our website or if you wish via mail as outlined in the monthly Cambrian Heights Newsletter. The Board encourages all residents to participate in the community activities and future events. By attending one or more social/sports events during the year your fees will be recovered.
If you are interested in exploring involvement with the Board or any specific volunteer activity please contact us at our email address. We will have two vacancies on the Board after the AGM in May. The most critical is our Social Director, who cannot continue into next year. If you are interested in this very rewarding position or even wish to share it with another volunteer please contact Jodi and she will be happy to discuss the position and responsibilities. The next meeting of the Board will take place Monday, February 6 at the Georgina Thomson building on 14th Street and Northmount Drive NW at 6:30 PM. All residents are welcome to attend and share any concerns, questions or ideas you may have relevant to Cambrian Heights.
