President’s Message – October 2015

With October comes fall weather and the Halloween Party scheduled for October 30th. at the Community Hall. It starts at 6:30PM and details may be found on our website. This is a great event for the children with music, prizes and games. Please contact the Board at cambrianheights@gmail.com or phone our Social Director Jodi Dixon at 403-276-4242 if you are available to help out this year. With our new fiscal budget envisioning additional programs and events we hope to have an Open House in October or November to recruit both new ideas and volunteers to enable increased usage of our facilities. Check our website for details of all social events, news and contact information. In that regard the Ice Committee continues to need volunteers to install and maintain the outdoor ice skating rink. If you can help please contact Scott Jacobson at scottcolleenj@gmail.com or any one of the directors.

We announced last month that the Board, as a first step in promoting new community activities, approved a $100 maximum grant for community block parties. This grant will be provided to a maximum of 10 such block parties over the 2016 fiscal year (April/2015-March/2016). Application for this grant can be made through the community email address. Costs will be reimbursed (excluding alcoholic beverages) with receipts pertaining to organized block parties with broad attendance of all age groups. We encourage you to access this funding and create your own block event. Over the summer we have sponsored one such event but hope for additional participation as everyone becomes aware of the program.

As reported last month the City of Calgary has recently appointed an independent commission to explore changes in the Ward boundaries for the October 2017 election. In all likelihood this will move Cambrian Heights into Ward 4. For more information on this possibility we refer you to the City website at www.calgary.ca (search for Ward Boundary Commission). We will be adding a Community Development Issues section to our website in the coming months and hope to provide residents with a comprehensive guide to Planning and Development issues that effect the community both directly and indirectly. We continue to encourage all residents to participate in the community activities and future planning by joining the association and communicating your thoughts either through emails or by attending one of our Board meetings which are always open for residents. Our next meeting will take place Monday November 2nd. at the Georgina Thomson building on 14th Street and Northmount Drive NW at 6:30PM.

The website now provides memberships to be subscribed over the internet for convenience of the residents.There is also a registration for all members or residents who wish to receive email notifications of special events or issues of interest to the community. Also for the first time we have amended our Bylaws to allow for Corporate memberships. We will be approaching the business community for their input on fostering improved relationships and participation between residents and local business in 2015 and beyond.

Cambrian Heights main fund raising event is a Casino time slot provided by the Alberta Gaming & Liquor Commission. Our next such Casino is scheduled for January 27-28, 2016. We are always in need of volunteers and if you are able we will appreciate you contacting Dan Vallee at danvallee@shaw.ca. It is a team approach and having volunteered in the past I assure you the work is not onerous nor too stressful.

Remember participation builds better communities.

On Behalf of the Board;
Daryl Connolly, President
