President’s Message – February 2017

On January 14 we hosted an introductory Cross Country Skiing course in association with theFoothills Nordic Club. The event was very successful supported by excellent snow conditions and first rate instructors. The following Saturday, January 21 we also provided residents with a Nordic Winter Walking introduction session. The snowshoeing course had to be postponed until February 11.  Our annual free Polar Party at the Hall was held on Saturday, January 28. We hope you and your children were able to attend one, two or all of these events. The Polar Party has grown in size every year and this year was no exception. Between 80 – 100 participants enjoyed this year’s warm weather and winter activities. As in the past, the community volunteers with the help of City of Calgary employees offered free rental skates, helmets, a fire pit plus games, treats and hot chocolate for all ages. We wish to thank our volunteers who organized and made these events successful under the direction of our Social Director, Jodi Dixon. As always if you participated in any of these events and wish to contribute your time and energy next year please drop Jodi a note at social@cambrianheightscommunity.com.

The remaining events in the first quarter of the year will be a Family Games and Pub Night February 11 and a Wine Tasting in March. Both of these events were initiated last year and we are looking forward to new participants this year to add to the attendees from last year. Please check our website for details of these events including times and entrance fees. As is our custom, members of the Community Association will pay a lower entrance fee for such events.

Of course, the ice rinks will be maintained throughout the winter for all to access. With two sheets of ice and the sustained winter weather, the rinks have been well utilized. Should you wish to help out the current rink volunteers this year or next please contact Scott Jacobson at 403-771-9755.

As we have previously discussed in these monthly messages our Planning Committee continues to be actively monitoring the issuance of Development Permits (“DP’s”) by the City in our community. This activity covers the gauntlet from secondary suites in RC-1 neighbourhoods to best guidelines for maintaining the identity of our community with growth and densification, to long-term transportation issues like the Green Line LRT. Everyone should remain vigilant as to development on their streets. We anticipate an increase in activity through 2017 and can provide information and assistance should an application be made for a new house construction on your street. If there are questions or concerns write to the Community Association (cambrianheights@gmail.com) or contact Daryl Beatty or Gary Wilson of the Planning Committee.

We continue to use a Facebook page to help communications and stimulate informational sharing and discussion amongst residents of the Community. It is under “Groups” with an address of “cambrianheightscommunity”. Please register for the Group and join this conversational page and share your thoughts and insights about where you live. One of our volunteers will also update any news of interest to the community.

As a reminder, your 2017 membership dues are now payable. We are maintaining our fee schedule costs for the year to encourage your renewal. The easiest way to renew or join is through our website or if you wish via mail as outlined in the monthly Cambrian Heights Newsletter. The Board encourages all residents to participate in the community activities and future events. By attending one or more social/sports events during the year your fees will be recovered.

If you are interested in exploring involvement with the Board or any specific volunteer activity please contact us at our email address. We will have two vacancies on the Board after the AGM in May. The most critical is our Social Director, who cannot continue into next year. If you are interested in this very rewarding position or even wish to share it with another volunteer please contact Jodi and she will be happy to discuss the position and responsibilities. The next meeting of the Board will take place Monday, February 6 at the Georgina Thomson building on 14th Street and Northmount Drive NW at 6:30 PM. All residents are welcome to attend and share any concerns, questions or ideas you may have relevant to Cambrian Heights.

POLAR PARTY SUCCESS!

Saturday’s Polar Party was another record success with 80 – 100 attendees of all ages. This is the third year of this winter outdoor festival supported by community volunteers and City of Calgary employees. While experiencing very warm weather and chinook winds the ice rinks held up for skaters. Games kept the young participants busy in the snow as did the hot chocolate bar, cakes and cookies. Free skates were provided and children chose to play hockey on the ice or street hockey in the parking lot. Thanks for all who attended this community event.

Our first event of the fall was the Picnic/BBQ on September 17 to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Cambrian Heights Community. This event was a great success made even more so by the attendance of Mayor Naheed Nenshi and our Ward 7 Council representative Druh Farrell. Both represented the City well engaging in heartfelt conversations with, in particular, the many seniors in attendance many of whom had been the first residents of Cambrian Heights. A lunch and celebration cake was enjoyed by all the adults while the children participated in the games and activities provided. Inside the Hall we developed a community historic display in addition to period artifacts from the 50’s and free period photo’s for all as a remembrance of the event. The City of Calgary presented the Community with a commemorative 60th Anniversary plaque. Photo’s of the event may be found on our website.

This was followed by a first ever Women’s Health & Wellness event on October 13. This provided to the attendees both stretch and dance movements and makeup and lashes provided by local merchants. In addition a wine tasting capped the evening and was provided by Northmount Liquor Store. This program was directed by Dr. Selma Mitha, who received a Doctorate of Chiropractic from the Southern California University of Health Sciences and is the owner of Kind Care Life. More information may be obtained by emailing kindcarelife@gmail.com.

On October 28 we hosted at the Community Hall our annual Halloween Party. This was again a well attended and very successful event.

The Community will also be hosting an Open house on November 17. At the Open House we will highlight the Community activities including City initiatives that will impact the community over the next few years. If you are at all interested in your community and perhaps at some point getting involved we welcome your attendance. If you have issues come and be heard as well. After the formal portion of the meeting we will be hosting informal conversations with the directors and will be providing various beers and ciders as refreshment.

January promised to be very active with three events planned built around winter activity. On January 14 we will host an introductory Cross Country Skiing course with Foothills Nordic Club. The following Saturday, January 21 will provide to residents a Nordic Winter Walking or Snowshoeing introductory session. This will then be followed by our annual Polar Party at the Hall Saturday January 28. We hope you and your children will attend one or all three events. The Polar Party has grown in size every year and offers free rental skates plus games and fun food for all ages.

As we have previously discussed in these monthly messages our Planning Committee continues to be actively monitoring the issuance of Development Permits (“DP’s”) by the City in our community. This activity covers the gauntlet from secondary suites in RC-1 neighbourhoods, to best guidelines for maintaining the identity of our community with growth and densification, to long term transportation issues. Everyone should remain vigilant as to development within their streets as activity is picking up as old houses sell and redevelopment occurs. If there are questions or concerns write to the community association (cambrianheights@gmail.com) or contact Daryl Beatty or Gary Wilson of the Planning Committee.

We have initiated a Facebook page to help communications and stimulate informational sharing and discussion amongst residents of the Community. It is under “Groups” with an address of “cambrianheightscommunity”. Please register for the Group and join this conversational page and share your thoughts and insights about where you live.

The Board continues to encourage all residents to participate in the community activities and future events and program planning by joining the association and communicating your suggestions either through emails or by attending one of our Board meetings which are always open for residents. It is with great satisfaction that sales of resident memberships have increased by over 75% in the last two years. Also over 750 people have attended the 7 social events so far in 2016 . If you are interested in exploring involvement with the Board or any specific volunteer activity please contact us at our email address. The next meeting will take place Monday, December 5 at the Georgina Thomson building on 14th Street and Northmount Drive NW at 6:30PM.

Northmount Drive N.W. Improvement Project Options Evaluation Workshop

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2016

Triwood Community Association (2244 Chicoutimi Drive N.W.)

The City met with Northmount Drive N.W. Improvement Project stakeholders in October 2015, hosted a public open house in February 2016 and collected online feedback as part of both events. Among the feedback, we heard concerns about school pick-up/drop-off zones, pedestrian safety, congestion and parking. In the spring, we held three workshops to discuss and identify solutions to these concerns.

The project team used this feedback, along with technical analysis, to develop improvement options for Northmount Drive N.W.

You are invited to participate in an options evaluation workshop to provide feedback on the proposed bike lane concept, intersection improvement options, proposed parking changes, school bus pick-up and drop-off zone improvements, and streetscape and pedestrian improvements.

Why are we doing this project?

Northmount Drive N.W. is scheduled for re-paving in 2017, which presents an opportunity to cost-effectively improve the current road design so it functions better for people who walk, bike, drive and take transit. The project will consider ways to improve traffic flow and pedestrian crossings, as well as accommodate bicycle lanes, which were recommended on Northmount Drive N.W. in the 2001 Pathway and Bikeway Implementation Plan and in the 2014 Complete Streets Guide

Community 60th Anniversary Celebration

On September 16 the Cambrian Heights Community celebrated the 60th anniversary of the community’s first houses being built in 1956. The celebration featured games for the children, a picnic buffet lunch, free period photo’s, a historic community display and both period music and artifacts. A highlight was the attendance of our Ward 7 Councilwomen Druh Farrell who presented the Community with a 60th Anniversary commemorative plaque. A surprise visit by Mayor Naheed Nenshi was well received by all as he made his way through the crowd initiating conversations and allowing many pictures to be taken. Both guests made a short speech which was much appreciated by all especially the many original residents of the community who attended the event.

Many thanks go out to our Social Director Jodi Dixon and her volunteer committee for this very successful and well-attended event.
