June will continue to be a very active month as we wind down for the summer break. At the publication of this report we will have hosted a Family Pub night on May 7th at the Community Hall. It featured games, puzzles, music and refreshments for the whole family. On June 12th we are, with the Rosemont Community, holding our second Annual Spring Clean-up Event at the Cambrian Heights Community Hall parking lot. Please see our website or the announcement in this Newsletter for details. The day prior, June 11th., there will be a garage sale event at the Community Hall where you can reserve a table for your items. Please contact Gary Wilson at 403-589-0507 for details. Then on June 25th the last of an informative and to date very well appreciated series of seminars hosted by the City around the planting and care of trees and shrubs will be held at the Hall. Then in a recent initiative, Dr. Salma Mitha will be conducting a Wine Women’s Health Workshop featuring healthy interactive power workout, a wine tasting and a make-over. If successful this program will be continued into the Fall. Tickets will be pre-sold for this event and are available for purchase at Northmount Liquor (1041 40th Ave NW).

On April 28th we held our Annual General Meeting. The slide show presentation and an update on the meeting may be found on our website.

On July 16th Cambrian Heights will be hosting its annual Stampede Breakfast at the Community Hall. This event has been growing in popularity so mark it on your calendar and bring the family down for pancakes, sausages, juice, coffee games and the chance to meet other members of the community. We always invite our City Councillor (Druh Farrell) and our MLA (Craig Coolahan) to these events and it is a great opportunity to meet your government representatives as well as the Community Officers and Directors. If you are able we always need help setting up and taking down for this event. So come early, the coffee will be on, or stay a little late. It will be appreciated.

We are currently organizing a Picnic/BBQ on September 17th to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Cambrian Heights Community. We envision at this time serving hamburgers, hot dogs, salads and beverages. This will be a family affair with games and activities planned for both the adults and children. As plans for this event mature we will be providing additional details. Anyone wishing to add suggestions or volunteer to assist in the planning, preparation or helping out with this event please contact Jodi Dixon at social@cambrianheightscommunity.com . There is an organizing committee that has already met May 5th but your participation with ideas or assistance will still be appreciated.

The Community Association continues to offer a $100 maximum grant for community block parties. Application for this grant can be made through the community email address. Costs will be reimbursed (excluding alcoholic beverages) with receipts pertaining to organized block parties with broad attendance of all age groups. We encourage you to access this funding and create your own block event for the summer or fall.

As we have previously discussed in these monthly messages our Planning Committee continues to be active in regards to monitoring the issuance of Development Permits (“DP’s”) by the City in our community. This activity covers the gauntlet from secondary suites in RC-1 neighbourhoods, to best guidelines for maintaining the identity of our community with the growth and densification, to long term transportation issues. Everyone should remain vigilant as to developments within their streets and if there are questions or concerns write to the community association (cambrianheights@gmail.com) or contact Daryl Beatty or Gary Wilson of the Planning Committee. Two new members of the community have agreed to join this committee recognizing the importance of this activity. We will be upgrading our reporting on these issues in the Planning section of our website in the future to make known to the residents issues of importance as they happen.

We continue to encourage all residents to participate in the community activities and future events and program planning by joining the association and communicating your thoughts either through emails or by attending one of our Board meetings which are always open for residents. Our next meeting will take place  Monday June 6th. at the Georgina Thomson  building on 14th Street and Northmount Drive NW at 6:30PM.

On April 28th we held our Annual General Meeting. The President and Treasurer provided an update on the prior two fiscal years and identified priorities for the next year. A Special Resolution was passed converting our fiscal year to correspond with the calendar year. This will allow more timely presentation of the audited financials and correspond with our membership timeframe. As such we will have for 2016 a nine month year from April 1 to December 31, 2016. Thereafter we will budget and report on a twelve month calendar basis. The slide show presentation and an update on the meeting may be found on our website.

As a result of our community being selected by the City for a Tree Planting Initiative we will be hosting a number of informative seminars around the planting and care of trees and shrubs. See our Events calendar and participate in these free educational seminars at the community hall. In addition we are initiating a family friendly Pub night on May 7th and hope to generate good initial support for this event. Special Resolution Altering the Definition of Fiscal Year and  Proper Notice in Cambrian Heights Community Association Bylaws

“ASSOCIATION BYLAWS”

BE IT RESOLVED AS A SPECIAL RESOLUTION of the COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION:

That the amendment to the Community Association Bylaws as filed with the Registrar of Corporations of Alberta be amended by adding the following Clauses and renumbering the impacted sequence of existing Clauses and references as required:

ARTICLE 2               DEFINITIONS AND INTERPERTATION

2.1.17              “Fiscal Year” means the twelve month period commencing on January 1st of a year and ending on December 31st of the same year.

2.1.25              “Proper Notice” means giving notice in writing, by letter or by publication in the Community newsletter or website, not less than ten days prior to the General Meeting, stating the intention or purpose of the meeting, and delivered to the last recorded street address or email address of the member, which notice is deemed to be given when delivered to an email address, household or post office, or when published in a Community newsletter or the Community website.

The purpose of the Fiscal year change is to better allow audited annual financial statement comparisons on a yearly basis at our yearly April Annual General Meeting and to coincide with the annual membership dues which are paid on a calendar year basis.

The addition of both email and website notices are to better reflect current social media trends and to allow more efficient communications on a time sensitive basis.

Big changes coming to street sweeping program

While City crews are out cleaning up the loose gravel and debris off our streets, all City staff can help make the annual Spring Clean-Up program a success by spreading the word about some significant changes.

  1. Seven days a week: This year, crews will be sweeping seven days a week, an increase from four days a week in the past. This means residents can expect to see sweepers in their neighbourhoods on the weekend and must remove vehicles and waste bins from the street at that time.
  2. Earlier finish: This year, street sweeping will run from April 3 to June 1, finishing a full month earlier than previous years.  The accelerated sweeping schedule will reduce the amount of material that can get washed into our storm sewer system. It also allows crews to focus on other summer activities such as pothole repair and boulevard maintenance.
  3. New parking restrictions: This year, all communities will be subject to parking fines with vehicle owners required to remove vehicles off the roadway during schedule sweeping. Residents need to look for the large street sweeping signs and/or small no-parking signs and following the parking restrictions outlined on sign.
  4. E-alerts: This year, residents will be able to sign up to receive an email notice alerting them that sweeping will occur on their street the next day. This feature will be available at Calgary.ca/sweep as of April 3.

To find out when sweeping is scheduled, residents are asked to watch for community signs or visit calgary.ca/sweep.

Final Week of March Community Association Awareness Month

Your community association brings you together as neighbours!

Your community association hosts a variety of events year round to bring you together as a community.  We offer many opportunities to meet your neighbours in a fun and welcoming environment close to home.

March Community Association Awareness Week 5 - Sense of Belonging

CHCA Wine Event a Great Success!

The March 11th Wine Tasting Event at the Cambrian Heights Community Hall was a great success with over 75 attendees. In fact ticket sales had to be suspended two days before the event due to seating capacity constraints.

Six wines were tasted and a very informative presentation was made by Susan Norrie of Pacific Wines dealing not only with the wines being tasted but covering numerous topics of interest to the participants who engaged her with many questions.

The event was made possible by the active participation and organizational skills of Cindy Sidhu owner of the Northmount Liquor Store and her team of energetic young assistants who greatly aided our Social Director Jodi Dixon and a number of Directors in the organization, setup, hosting and cleanup effort. An extra thanks goes out to Barbara Milne for her efforts in planning and preparing the generous food trays supplied at each table.

These events rely greatly on the volunteer effort. Many attendees asked for this event to be repeated and it is our intent to do so. However, we may only undertake such events with volunteer help. Our directors are limited in their capacity to add new events to the already growing calendar currently in place. Please visit our website www.cambrianheightscommunity.com and contact Jodie Dixon who can tailor your interests and availability to help our community continue to put on such events.

We have made some changes as to the announcement of new events with the table shown above. This Upcoming Events table will be published monthly to better allow planning for and participation in our events for the residents of Cambrian heights. During our 2016 year we have introduced a new Wine tasting event while continuing with the second annual Skating/Polar Party and our annual Fall Open House and Halloween Party.

On March 11th we held our first Wine Tasting event and it was a great success. Attendance exceeded our expectations such that we had to close ticket sales. A very enjoyable and informative evening provided us incentive to do this again in our 2017 fiscal year planning. We would like to give special thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this event so successful as well as our great appreciation to Cindy Sidhu owner of Northmount Liquor Store and Susan Norrie of Pacific Wines and Spirits.

As a result of our community being selected by the City for a Tree Planting Initiative we will be hosting a number of informative seminars around the planting and care of trees and shrubs. See our Events calendar and participate in these free educational seminars at the community hall.

To start our 2017 fiscal year the Community will be hosting the Annual General Meeting on April 28th, a Family Pub Night on May 7th, the Community Garage Sale & Cleanup on June 11/12  and our always successful Stampede Breakfast July 16th. New events are being discussed for the Fall and we encourage anyone with ideas or suggestions to contact the Board at cambrianheights@gmail.com or attend one of our Board meetings.

Our 2017 fiscal year (April 2016 – March 2017) celebrates the 60th anniversary for the Community. We are currently organizing a Picnic/BBQ on September 17th to celebrate this event. The website now provides memberships to be subscribed over the internet for convenience of the residents. There is also an ability for all residents who wish to receive email notifications of special events or issues of interest to the community to register.
