On March 15, in reaction to the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the City of Calgary ordered the closing of all community and recreational buildings. This shut down all programs and services at our community hall. This has resulted in the deferrals of many scheduled events, third party rentals, our programs and the Edelweiss Preparatory School. At the writing of this letter, we are still unsure of when this closure order will be rescinded. We trust Cambrian Heights residents will appreciate the new challenges facing our volunteers. Any updates will be published on our website (cambrianheightscommunity.com), through email blasts to those registered through our website and on our Facebook page.

I am sure everyone recognizes the seriousness of the COVID-19 pandemic and respects the Provincial guidelines with regard to social distancing and hygiene. We wish everyone in our community good health and encourage patience as we together work through a devastating period both emotionally and for many of us financially. Hopefully, at the publication of this newsletter, we will be progressing out of this health crisis.

Our Annual General Meeting was scheduled to be held on June 25. We elect the Board of Directors at our AGM for a one year term and review the financial status and planned programs for the Community over the active year. However, due to the COVID-19 virus and the resultant uncertainty as to when the City Community Halls will reopen and the limit on assemblies of people, the AGM has been postponed to October 22. Please check the September Newsletter or our website for details of the meeting agenda and Director nominations.

We encourage new participation at the Board level to maintain the programs, events, ideas and fiscal strength of our community. In particular, we are especially looking for residents with a financial background to either assume or help in the Treasurer role. We have held an Asado BBQ in September for the last two years. We would like to continue this very successful event which not only features fine food and beverage but aspiring musicians from Cambrian Heights and the nearby communities. What we need are volunteers interested in getting involved with this event. We anticipate changes in the format and will welcome suggestions. Our weekly drop-in yoga program and our general fitness programs (Body-Lift, Kettlebell Kick-boxing, New Cardio-Barre Fusion and New Barre Above) were forced to adjust in regards to their physical presence at the Community Hall with the City mandated closures. We are planning to start a new program in September at the Community Hall – language lessons. We are starting with Spanish and this is an entry-level course. It will run for 12 weeks starting September 15. It will be provided through Azren the Language Nerd staff. Attendance will be limited to eight participants this first time to keep an intimate and active experience. Please watch for registration details in the July Newsletter or on our website. We hope this will be the first of many such language course curriculums.

We have combined with neighbouring communities to comment and recommend further public consultations. Updates on this issue will be provided in future Newsletters as well as on our website (www.cambrianheightscommunity.com).

As a reminder, due to COVID-19 concerns, the City has cancelled all Community Cleanups for 2020.

The next meeting of the Board is scheduled for September 14. These meetings normally take place at the Georgina Thomson City building on 14th Street and Northmount Drive at 6:30 PM. Over the past three months, these meetings have been either cancelled, held utilizing remote technology or in the larger space provided at the Community Hall. Upcoming Events at Cambrian Heights Hall

This shut down all programs and services at our community hall. This will, of course, result in a loss of revenue through rentals during the as yet undetermined length of this shutdown. We have taken appropriate steps in terms of cost control while assuring ourselves of administrative continuity when the crisis clears. There will be an impact on previously scheduled events. The French Wine Tasting scheduled for May 9 has been moved to November 14. The Cambrian School Yard Sale April 25 has been cancelled. A new event, Girls Night Out, has been moved from June 13 to as yet an undetermined date in the Fall. Many of our committees will also experience a slowdown in activities through this period and will impact much of our directions in planning, safety and park developments. We trust Cambrian Heights residents will appreciate the new challenges facing our volunteers. Any updates will be published on our website, through email blasts to those registered through our website and on our Facebook page.

However, the guidelines proposed will allow previously single-family zoned areas, such as much of Cambrian Heights, to be developed with duplexes, four-plexes, row housing and taller homes mixed with commercial enterprises. We are combining with neighbouring communities to comment and recommend further public consultations. We submitted a letter to the City and all of Council recommending a postponement of the scheduled April 27 hearing on this issue. This letter was supported by other communities as well as a second letter requesting, as a result of the issues surrounding COVID-19, for a postponement of the public engagement deadline around the Municipal Development Plan and the Calgary Transportation Plan.

Cambrian Heights has maintained a Community Garden for a number of years. In the past, there has always been a waiting list for plots. This is no longer the case. If you are interested in utilizing one of these plots for a vegetable garden or have questions, please contact Christine Breed at garden@cambrianheightscommunity.com.

A recent decision by the City cancelled all Community Cleanups for 2020. We will update residents should this decision change.

The next meeting of the Board is scheduled for May 4. Dependent on City directives, in regards to the COVIID-19 virus, this meeting may be held utilizing remote technology. Upcoming Events at Cambrian Heights Hall

Our March 7 Volunteer Appreciation evening was once again hampered by winter weather. However, over 25 residents did attend and were warmed with wine, snacks, a trivia pursuit contest plus a preview of our preliminary ideas to enhance the current Off-Leash Dog Park by Queens Park Cemetery. We also discussed a gardening project being proposed around the Hall plus the recent City of Calgary Guidelines for Great Communities proposals. I have added some pictures from the evening. We thank those that attended and extend our appreciation to all volunteer efforts for those who could not attend.

We are planning a Wine Tasting on May 9 which will have a southern France “Provence” theme. Be sure to mark your calendars for this opportunity to enjoy tasting six wines from this magical area of southern France with a charcuterie board to enhance the taste buds. See the poster in this month’s Newsletter for details and buy your tickets on our website (www.cambrianheightscommunity.com). Tickets are limited so get yours early.

The Cambrian School Parents, supported by the Community Association, will be hosting a Yard Sale Saturday, April 25th. If you want to purchase a table for $20 to sell your household items please contact the School Council at cambrian.schoolcouncil@gmail.com. Otherwise, come out that day to see what bargains present themselves.

As a new event, we are planning a Girls Night Out on Saturday, June 13. This will feature wine, snacks, bingo games with prizes and is being co-sponsored by Tupperware representatives who live in Cambrian Heights. More details will be forthcoming as the event draws closer.

Upcoming Events at Cambrian Heights Hall

Our upcoming events are a March 7 Volunteer Appreciation evening with wine, beer, games and snacks for all those who make our past events a success and for those interested in learning how they can contribute in 2020 and beyond.  Meet your neighbours, learn more about your community, view our facilities and help make Cambrian Heights a vibrant and welcoming place to live.

We are planning a Wine Tasting on May 9 which will have a southern France “Provence” theme. Be sure to mark your calendars for this opportunity to enjoy wines from this magical area of southern France with cheese, bread and meats to enhance the taste buds. On a more serious theme, our Annual General Meeting will be held June 16. If you want to understand the City planning and development issues, our progress with enhancements to our Off-Leash Dog park, social and educational events planned for the remainder of 2020, or simply to add your voice to future directives, please join us that evening.

By mid-March, our outdoor ice rinks are generally negatively impacted by weather. I want to take this opportunity to thanks Scott Jacobson and his crew (Brent Else, Dave Lamoureux, Jack Dorval, Rob Kirk, Ryan Bowen, Tyler Reilly, Raymond Haspel and Justin Novak ) for their outstanding dedication throughout the winter season in maintaining an excellent quality of ice on our two rinks. Participation and appreciation continue to increase from residents and adjoining community participants. In retrospect, we picked the worst day (warm and rain) of the winter for our Polar Party (February 1) but recognize the valiant efforts of Scott’s crew against Mother Nature.

The Planning Committee remains very active in response to increasing developmental permit applications in Cambrian Heights. They also are responding to “cut-thru” safety traffic issues that appear to be awaiting a decision from City Council on residential traffic speed limits. Of a major nature is the overall planning changes being considered for Calgary. The recently published Guidebook for Calgary Communities published by the City of Calgary (available at www.calgary.ca) envisions the complete overhaul of development approval processes involving the grouping of existing communities into Local Area Plans. An example of this, readily available at the City website, is the North Hill Plan involving 10 communities. These plans establish higher density areas of development after a consultation process with representatives of the communities involved. The idea is to streamline the building permit process. We encourage your involvement in this major change to how Cambrian Heights will be developed in future years.

Upcoming Events at Cambrian Heights Hall

Our 6th Annual Polar Party was held on Saturday, February 1. For the second year, the Cambrian School Parents Association added to the free rental skates, helmets, hot chocolate, apple cider, music and fire pit with their charity Chilli cook-off and toonie bake sale. At the writing of this letter, I can only hope the weather cooperated and the event continued its reputation for the enjoyment of all ages and great hot chocolate by the fire pit.

Our upcoming events are a March 7 Volunteer Appreciation evening with wine, beer and snacks for all those who make our events a success and for those interested in learning how they can contribute in 2020 and beyond towards maintaining the quality and enthusiasm these community events. We are also planning a Wine Tasting on May 9 which will have a French Provence theme. Be sure to mark your calendars for this opportunity to enjoy wines from this magical area of southern France.

As outlined previously, we at Cambrian Heights have initiated a Community Parks focus to better develop, recognize and utilize our park spaces in the future. Our first focus areas will be the park on 10th Street and 32nd Avenue adjoining Queen’s Park Cemetery. This is currently an Off-Leash Dog Park. A committee of volunteers has been formed involving residents of both Cambrian Heights and Rosemont. If you wish to be involved in future fundraising to preserve this park please let us know by emailing cambrianheights@gmail.com. This joint initiative is further being supported by the team at BentallGreenOak who manages the North Hill Mall and the involvement of the Pathway Church in Cambrian Heights.

The Community continues to maintain and improve the Community Hall and grounds with renovations and additions. Key to this being achieved is the financial support given to communities like ourselves by the Province of Alberta’s programs, a cornerstone of which is the Community Facility Enhancement Program (“CFEP”). A recent Calgary Herald article authored by Heather Klimchuk pointed out that “Non-profit leaders across Alberta voiced concerns about “further off-loading of responsibilities to the non-profit sector without adequate resources to meet the needs of the community.” With the 2020/21 Provincial Budget preparations underway, programs such as CFEP are at risk. Please add your voice to ours and let your MLA for Calgary Klein (Jeremy Nixon at calgary.klein@assembly.ab.ca) know how important programs such as CFEP are to preserving community health particularly in these tough economic times Calgary is experiencing.

Upcoming Events at Cambrian Heights Hall

A new year begins at Cambrian Heights and winter is in full swing. Focus for the next two months will be on the twin ice skating sheets so well looked after by our rink rats team led by Scott Jacobson. We greatly appreciate the work this team undertakes in sometimes harsh winter conditions. They contribute greatly to the community providing a healthy outlet for children and adults alike during our long winter. They are always looking for additional volunteers so if you have time to help out please contact Scott Jacobson at scottcolleenj@gmail.com

This outdoor ice will be highlighted in our 6th Annual Polar Party on Saturday, February 1 thanks to the dedication of Jodi Dixon over the entire six years. For the second year, the Cambrian School Parents Association will add to the free rental skates, helmets, hot chocolate, apple cider, music and firepit with their charity Chilli Cook-off and Toonie Bake Sale. This will be held inside the warm hall along with some crafts and other activities. Taste the chilli and cast your vote. With luck, the bake sale will be brought outside for the hungry skaters. A reminder that the free skates and helmets are for adults as well. Give it a try as this event is for fun and all ages.

On November 30 we held our third annual kids Lego Contest thanks to the organizer Nancy Else. It was again very well attended with 33 entries and about 75 people viewing the various Lego creations. Everyone was impressed with the creativity by the kids and especially the project done by the University of Calgary engineering students. Upcoming Events at Cambrian Heights Hall

The Community Hall was very active in the last few weeks of October and into November. Three events were hosted and a community landscaping project was completed. On October 19 the Cambrian School once again hosted their fall Home Based Trade Show featuring a full line-up of vendors. The event is an annual fundraiser for the Cambrian School Parent Association and once again it was a success. Pictures enclosed give you a feel for the number of vendor booths. They are planning to host this event again in November 2020 with the support of the Community Association.

The annual Halloween Dance was held October 26 to a sold-out crowd of children and adults alike. Games, music, pizza and treats provided the children an evening of activity, costumes and fun. We were pleased that new volunteers were recruited to orchestrate the event and the DJ was particularly involved in directing numerous music-focused activities. Pictures from the event demonstrate the variety of costumes present throughout the evening.

On November 2 the Hall hosted 15 participants in our second Cambrian Heights Cooking Class. This evening, purposely designed for a maximum of 16 attendees to maintain the intimacy of this fall feast including homemade soup, a deboned turkey meal with all the trimmings, dessert, and wine. Chef Don Turnbull provided tips on preparation, decoration and easy cooking techniques that everyone appreciated as well as the fine meal created.

Our future events are listed below including the kids Lego Contest directed by Nancy Else on November 30. This is always a fun viewing event and I hope some of you stopped by to witness the creativity of the children participating.

For 2020 we have so far scheduled the annual Polar party February 1st., followed by a Volunteer Appreciation night in March, a Wine Tasting focusing of French Provence wines in May and our Annual Meeting in June. Watch for more details of these events in future newsletters as well as our website (www.cambrianheightscomunity.com) and our facebook page.

Upcoming Events

Our weekly yoga program and our fitness drop-in programs (Piloxing, Kickboxing, Body Lift and new Barre Above) programs are continuing although the Christmas Season will witness suspension until January. Check the website for any updated schedule changes.

In running the Community and both adding facilities and undertaking outdoor maintenance of our property we are always looking for volunteers to help out. In October we advertised for help in trimming bushes and upgrading the garden plots on our community lands. A party of 12 volunteers undertook this work on a fall Saturday morning and afternoon. It was hard work but participation strengthened our belief in community spirit. Thanks to all that participated.

Also in a busy October, the Community Association installed a second set of benches on the property which will provide seating between our two ice surfaces this winter. The parents for the spring soccer leagues will also appreciate these benches. Items like these are financed with the proceeds of our Casino nights provided through the AGLC. That is why these two nights of volunteering by upwards of 45 residents are so important to the community. Think about volunteering for the next casino as you enjoy the comfort of these benches.

We have formed a committee of residents to undertake a determination of how to improve this park through design and facility additions reflecting its importance and ownership within our community. This is a joint initiative by Cambrian Heights and Rosemont with support from the team at BentallGreenOak who manages the North Hill Mall.

September witnessed continual activity at the Community Hall with the completion of upgrades to the lower and upper levels. We have attached pictures below highlighting the main Hall and kitchen areas. These upgrades were made with assistance from the City of Calgary through their Capital Conservation Grant Program and the Province through their Community Facility Enhancement Program. We would like to thank both Councillor Sean Chu and our MLA Jeremy Nixon for their support in obtaining supporting funding. The community funding for these additions came from the proceeds of our second quarter Casino fundraising through the Alberta Liquor and Gaming Commission program. This illustrates the importance to the Community of the Casino activity and our appreciation goes out to those volunteers that made it happen.

Upcoming Events

The parents of Cambrian Elementry School have once again combined with the Community Association to host a market day consisting of your favourite catalogue home-based companies. This was a very successful event last year and is the main fundraising event for the parents to support children’s’ activity associated with the school. Please reference the poster in this month’s issue for details.

Again this Fall we hope to host our annual Halloween Dance and party for the children. At this point, we need new volunteers to help organize this event. If you are able to help in this regard please contact us at cambrianheights@gmail.com. The Halloween Dance is annually very popular and we encourage you to help sustain this event. If confirmed we encourage you to purchase your tickets in advance on our website (www.cambrianheightscommunity.com) to avoid the disappointment felt by a few last years as we reached hall capacity. Details of this event may be found in this newsletter issue or our website.

After the success enjoyed this spring we are scheduling another Cooking Class hosted by Chef Don Turnbull for Saturday, November 2. This class will feature fall recipes for turkey (including deboning), sweet potatoes, roasted Brussel sprouts with bacon and a seasonal dessert. Tickets are only $25 (members) and include the meal with wine. A poster with details for the event may be found in this issue. Only 16 tickets will be sold to enhance the intimate experience. Again these tickets will be available on our website.

As outlined previously, we at Cambrian Heights have initiated a Community Parks focus to better develop, recognize and utilize our park spaces in the future. One of our first focus areas will be the park on 10th Street and 32nd Avenue adjoining Queen’s Park Cemetery. This is currently an Off-Leash Dog Park and the focus of much controversy in 2005 and 2018. We are forming a committee of residents who want to take part in determining how to improve this park through de-sign and facility additions to reflect its importance and ownership within our community. If you wish to be involved in this process please let us know by emailing cambrianheights@gmail.com. A few interested residents have come forward already. We will be focusing our development ide-as for this park space in the Fall in association with support from our neighbours at Rosemont and the team at Bentall Kennedy who manages the North Hill Mall. Please get involved if you value this current Off-Leash Dog Park and wish to maintain it for our use in the future.

The next meeting of the Board will take place on October 7. All residents are welcome to attend. These meetings normally take place at the Georgina Thomson City building on 14th Street and Northmount Drive at 6:30 PM.

September witnessed continual activity at the Community Hall with the completion of upgrades to the lower and upper levels. We have attached pictures below highlighting the main Hall and kitchen areas. These upgrades were made with assistance from the City of Calgary through their Capital Conservation Grant Program and the Province through their Community Facility Enhancement Program. We would like to thank both Councillor Sean Chu and our MLA Jeremy Nixon for their support in obtaining supporting funding. The community funding for these additions came from proceeds of our second quarter Casino fundraising through the Alberta Liquor and Gaming Commission program. This illustrates the importance to the Community of the Casino activity and our appreciation goes out to those volunteers that made it happen.

Upcoming Events

The parents of Cambrian Elementry School have once again combined with the Community Association to host a market day consisting of your favourite catalogue home-based companies. This was a very successful event last year and is the main fundraising event for the parents to support children’s’ activity associated with the school. Please reference the poster in this months issue for details.

Again this Fall we hope to host our annual Halloween Dance and party for the children. At this point, we need new volunteers to help organize this event. If you are able to help in this regard please contact us at cambrianheights@gmail.com. The Halloween Dance is annually very popular and we encourage you to help sustain this event. If confirmed we encourage you to purchase your tickets in advance on our website (www.cambrianheightscommunity.com) to avoid the disappointment felt by a few last years as we reached hall capacity. After the success enjoyed this spring we are scheduling another Cooking Class hosted by Chef Don Turnbull for Saturday, November 2. This class will feature fall recipes for turkey (including deboning), sweet potatoes, roasted Brussel sprouts with bacon and a seasonal dessert. Tickets are only $25 (members) and include the meal with wine. A poster with details for the event may be found in this issue. Only 16 tickets will be sold to enhance the intimate experience. Again these tickets will be available on our website.

Our weekly yoga program and our fitness drop-in programs (Piloxing, Kickboxing, Body Lift and new Barre Above) programs were restarted in September with evening times posted on our website and in the Newsletter. For more detailed information on these programs please check either of these sources.

We will once again be hosting our annual Lego contest on Saturday, November 30. This has become an ever increasingly popular event so we encourage you to check the poster in this issue or on the website. For further details do not hesitate to contact Nancy Else at nancy.else@gmail.com

July and August witnessed continual activity at the Community Hall with upgrades to lower and upper-level washrooms, replacement of all fluorescent lighting to energy-saving LED fixtures, painting and replacement of flooring over most of the main hall social and kitchen areas. These upgrades were made with assistance from the City of Calgary through their Capital Conservation Grant Program and the Province through their Community Facility Enhancement Program. We would like to thank both Councillor Sean Chu and our MLA Jeremy Nixon for their support in obtaining these funds. We have also added ceiling fans in our main hall for the comfort of large gatherings and our fitness programs. We are also planning to add additional seating for outdoor skating in the winter and McKnight soccer in the spring. The funds for these additions came from proceeds of our second quarter Casino fundraising through the Alberta Liquor and Gaming Commission program. The Hall will be available for viewing these upgrades in September.

Upcoming Events

Once again we will be starting our Fall social programs with another September Asado BBQ. I have enclosed a few pictures from last years event. This was a great success last year with Chilean style outdoor barbecued lamb, pig and vegetables plus music, singers, storey tellers, wine, cider and beer. This was a family affair that lasted well into the evening as the musicians were outstanding. Tickets must be purchased on our community website. We strongly recommend you do so quickly based upon our capacity limitations and experience from last year. If you would like to volunteer for this event or contribute to the music please contact Jodie Dixon (social@cambrianheightscommunity.com) and help make this another memorable family and neighbourhood event.
