President’s Message – January 2016

With the new year comes new opportunities to get involved and both enjoy and enhance your community. With the success of the Open House in November we have assembled a list of ideas and new volunteers to help continue our program of advancing the objectives of community development inherent in the objectives of our community association. Our Polar Party scheduled for January 16th at the community ice rink will once again offer free skates and helmets plus hot chocolate and cookies to keep everyone warm and energized. There will also be a fire pit to sit and visit with your neighbours as well as a community table where you may sell, swap or give away your old winter sports equipment to others in the community. Participate and enjoy the day.

On March 11th we are planning our first wine tasting event. Helped out by Northmount Liquor we will be tasting 7 wines in various price ranges with breads, meats and cheeses to accompany the wines. Cost for this event will only be $10 per member and $15 per non member. This is a chance to learn about wines and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and evening with your neighbours. Participation is key to supplying sufficient wine for this event and thus we need to have advanced ticket sales that may be purchased at Northmount Liquor at 1041 40th Avenue NW or on our website. If you wish to get involved with helping out at this event or any future event please contact our Social Director Jodi Dixon at social@cambrianheightscommunity.com

The Community Association continues to offer a $100 maximum grant for community block parties. This grant will be provided to a maximum of 10 such block parties over the 2016-18 fiscal years (April/2015-March/2017). Application for this grant can be made through the community email address. Costs will be reimbursed (excluding alcoholic beverages) with receipts pertaining to organized block parties with broad attendance of all age groups. We encourage you to access this funding and create your own block event for the winter, spring or summer.

As we have previously discussed in these monthly messages our Planning Committee continues to be active in attending seminars and educating themselves in regards to the issuance of Development Permits (“DP’s”) by the City in our community. We recognize re-development is going to happen as the population of Calgary grows and the City continues to promote growth and densification in the inner city to better utilize existing infrastructure. We remain committed within the bounds of the existing Land Use Bylaw 2007 to retain the green spaces, large trees and general character of the houses in our community. We have made additions to the website to help explain the permit process and have met with City officials to discuss future development. Everyone should remain vigilant as to developments within their streets and if there are questions or concerns write to the community association (cambrianheights@gmail.com) or contact Darryl Beatty or Gary Wilson of the Planning Committee.

We have experienced another green space issue with the first snowfall as individuals with little or no respect drive their trucks into the parks within our community in some perverse show of individualism. If you witness such activity please contact the community at cambrianheights@gmail.com or the police at 311 or 403-266-1234. The protection of our parks is everyones responsibility.

We continue to encourage all residents to participate in the community activities and future events and program planning by joining the association and communicating your thoughts either through emails or by attending one of our Board meetings which are always open for residents. One of our most successful programs is the Yoga class every Wednesday at 7:00 – 8:00 at the Community Hall. Participate and enhance our community programs. Our next meetings will take place Monday December 2nd. and Monday January 4th. at the Georgina Thomson building on 14th Street and Northmount Drive NW at 6:30PM.

The website now provides memberships to be subscribed over the internet for convenience of the residents. Our new year begins January 1st and we encourage all existing members to renew via the website. There is also an ability for all residents who wish to receive email notifications of special events or issues of interest to the community to register without becoming members. We encourage membership as support to the numerous volunteers and programs initiated by their dedication to the community but also encourage those who are uncertain as to membership to register as email recipients to become better informed of both activities and issues relevant to the community.

Cambrian Heights main fund raising event in support of the many activities and programs is a Casino time slot provided by the Alberta Gaming & Liquor Commission. Our next such Casino is scheduled for January 27-28, 2016. We are always in need of volunteers and if you are able we will appreciate you contacting Dan Vallee at danvallee@shaw.ca. It is a team approach and having volunteered in the past I assure you the work is not onerous nor too stressful. Transportation, babysitting and a meal is provided.

On behalf of the Board of Directors we wish all residents of Cambrian Heights the best for 2016.

Remember Participation Builds Better Communities.

On Behalf of the Board;
Daryl Connolly, President

When Cardboard Sewer Pipes Were a Good Idea

Orangeburg PipingAn article published in the November 9th edition of the National Post highlighted the use of cardboard sewer pipes (marketed under the Orangeburg name) in the housing boom after WW II to accommodate the “baby boomers”. This was reflective of the shortage of metal in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. This article, by Tristin Hopper may be found at the National Post website www.nationalpost.com and searching cardboard pipes. Alternatively Googling “Orangeburg” will indicate a number of sites discussing the problems now being encountered with this piping in many houses. This can be a major expense to the homeowner as they are responsible for the connection from the residence to the City main lines.

Orangeberg Pipes

After reviewing this article we requested from the City a synopsis of the use of this piping in Cambrian Heights. We have published their response below for your information.

“I’ve looked into your request regarding Orangeburg sanitary mains in the Cambrian Heights community. I would like to first point out that the City only keeps database records of the publicly owned portion of each water/sanitary/storm service connection that runs from the mains in the street to the property line of each private home or establishment. The portion of each service connection on private property is generally unknown to us, unless we’ve had a trouble crew investigate a service and they noted the material as part of the investigation.

That being said I can assure you that none of the sanitary mains in the City use this material. We do keep track of the material of each service connection for the city-owned portion of the service. Our records do not track these Orangeburg pipes specifically, although we do have a
material group called “Other” which captures the material of services that are either unknown or not in one of our standard material groups.
Here is the breakdown of sanitary services broken down by material for your community:

[table “2” not found /]

The most common sanitary service connection materials used in this community when it was originally developed were Cast Iron and Transite (also known as Asbestos Cement). On the public side of the service, there are only 69 in the community that could potentially be Orangeburg or what we tend to call tar and paper wrapped pipes. Although, I can’t say for sure there are not more or less on the public side of the service connection. In general, the material is likely to be the same on both sides of the service connection, but I can’t say with 100% certainty. I know the tar and paper wrapped pipes exist in other communities because I’ve handled calls about them in the past. The majority of issues with service connections are caused by roots getting into the service, and tend to happen the most with damaged clay tile pipe or these tar/paper wrapped pipes you were asking about.

If you have any further questions, I would be happy to help. Thank you for your 311 service request.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Hastings, P.Eng.

President’s Message – December 2015

October ended with the annual Halloween Party and November was highlighted in the Community with an Open
House Social on November 19th. Both these events have in the past been well attended as the Halloween Party entertains both children and adults alike and the Open House offers residents a chance to meet, mingle and exchange ideas. Once the Board digests the feedback from the Open House I will forward the highlights to the residents in my January newsletter. Certainly these meetings offer you a chance to provide input to the Directors towards social, recreational or educational programs, development concerns on a general or specific basis, parks development and potential new development in and around the Community Hall. Your voice and input to the Directors is an essential part of bettering our community.

In January we once again will host a Winter skating Party at the Hall with free rental skates plus music and games.
The tentative date for this event is January 16, 2016 from 1-4PM. Please check our website or watch for signs with
details of this event and all future social events, news and contact information. In that regard the Social Committee
and ice rink group continues to need volunteers to assist in these programs. If you are able to help in any manner
please contact Scott Jacobson at scottcolleenj@gmail.com for the ice group or Jodi Dixon, Social Director at
social@cambrianheightscommunity.com to get involved with our programs.

The Community Association continues to offer a $100 maximum grant for community block parties. This grant will be provided to a maximum of 10 such block parties over the 2016 fiscal year (April/2015-March/2016). Application for this grant can be made through the community email address. Costs will be reimbursed (excluding alcoholic beverages) with receipts pertaining to organized block parties with broad attendance of all age groups. We encourage you to access this funding and create your own block event for the fall or winter.

As reported last month, the City of Calgary has recently appointed an independent commission to explore changes in the Ward boundaries for the October 2017 election. In all likelihood this will move Cambrian Heights into Ward 4. For more information on this possibility we refer you to the City website at www.calgary.ca (search for Ward Boundary Commission). We have recently added a Community Planning & Development Issues section to our website in November that provides residents with a reference to current regulations and guidelines that apply to our community as well as Planning and Development issues that effect the community both directly and indirectly. In additional a “Links” section will soon be added providing useful information and educational sources for residents.

We continue to encourage all residents to participate in the community activities and future planning by joining the
association and communicating your thoughts either through emails or by attending one of our Board meetings which are always open for residents. Our next meetings will take place Monday November 2nd. and Monday December 7th. at the Georgina Thomson building on 14th Street and Northmount Drive NW at 6:30PM.

The website now provides memberships to be subscribed over the internet for convenience of the residents. There is
also a registration for all members or residents who wish to receive email notifications of special events or issues of
interest to the community. Also for the first time we have amended our Bylaws to allow for Corporate memberships.
We will be approaching the business community for their input on fostering improved relationships and participation between residents and local business in 2015 and beyond. Watch for additions to our website in coming months in this regard.

President’s Message – November 2015

November will be highlighted in the Community with an Open House Social on November 19th at 7:30PM. This event will offer free wine and cheese while providing residents in the Cambrian Heights a chance to meet the Directors, hear about recent issues and future development priorities within our neighbourhood. This is your chance to provide input to the Directors towards social, recreational or educational programs, development concerns on a general or specific basis, parks development and potential new development in and around the Community Hall. Please attend and have your voice heard.

By the time this letter has been published in the newsletter the Halloween Party scheduled for October 30th will have already occurred. We are hoping for a continued growth in participation and know it will have been a fun evening based upon the activities planned by our Social Director Jodi Dixon and her volunteer group. As an aside the Presidents Letter for the following month is published on our website two weeks in advance of the Newsletter delivery to your house.

Check our website for details of all future social events, news and contact information. In that regard the Ice
Committee continues to need volunteers to install and maintain the outdoor ice skating rink. If you can help please

President’s Message – September 2015

Vacation season, of course, minimized activity in the community for the month of August. As mentioned the July highlight was the Stampede Breakfast, which feed over 300 participants with a hearty breakfast of pancakes, sausages, and fruit. In addition, one of our directors represented the Community in the annual Stampede Parade, and we have attached a picture to this month’s newsletter. We have also attached to our website a number of pictures from the Stampede Breakfast. We need help to continue with these types of events and maintain their level of excellence. If you can help out this year with any new ideas or to just volunteer your time, please contact the Board at cambrianheights@gmail.com or phone our Social Director Jodi Dixon at 403-276-4242. With the new fiscal year, we are hoping to add additional events in the Fall to complement our very successful annual Halloween Party, which is scheduled this year for October 30th. With our new fiscal budget envisioning additional programs and events, we hope to have an Open House in October to recruit both new ideas and volunteers to enable increased usage of our facilities. Check our website for details of all social events, news and contact information.

On the issue of Secondary Suites, City Council, as reported last month, turned down the proposal to amend the Bylaw in regards to Wards 7, 8, 9 and 11. Council as a whole decided there were enough issues not addressed by the Bylaw changes to send the proposal back to the City Planners. We expect the issue to again arise sometime in the future but hopefully with an improved set of parameters and incentives to better address the issues of safety and compliance in currently illegal suites throughout the City. The City of Calgary has recently appointed an independent commission to explore changes in the Ward boundaries for the October 2017 election. In all likelihood, this will move Cambrian Heights into Ward 4. For more information on this possibility, we refer you to the City website at www.calgary.ca (search for Ward Boundary Commission).

We continue to encourage all residents to participate in the community activities and future planning by joining the association and communicating your thoughts either through emails or by attending one of our Board meetings which are always open for residents.
