Our first Cooking Class was a hit!

The Cambrian Heights Community held its first Cooking Class in the Hall’s newly completed commercial kitchen on Saturday evening March 9. The Event was sold out with 21 participants attending. Chef Don Turnbull prepared a full course dining experience with broccoli soup, Caesar salad, roast pork, pork schnitzel, baby potatoes and carrots. For dessert crepes were prepared with strawberry topping. The meal, prepared and cooked by Chef Don, was accompanied by instructions, stories and kitchen tips for all to learn and enjoy. Detailed recipes were handed out and many notes were taken. Glasses of wine were provided to accompany the food which was relished by all participants. The three hours ended with spontaneous applause and urging for additional cooking classes in the future.
Pictures of the event and food are shown below:

Volunteer Appreciation Night 2019 was a success!

Despite some chilly temperatures the Volunteer Appreciation Night on Saturday, February 9 met with good success. Over 25 volunteers attended the evening of wine, food and games. Thanks to Barb Milne and Jodie Dixon everyone shared stories from the neighbourhood, laughed with the team trivia games and enjoyed a social thank you to our volunteers. New ideas for community events and particularly improved use of our parks space came out of the evening.

This will definitely be an event repeated in the future. Thanks to all who came and helped out with the appreciation event.

Participation Builds Your Community: An Interview with Barb Milne

What long-time Board Member has to say about volunteering for the Community:

Why did you volunteer in Cambrian Heights?

My relationship with the board began around 15 years ago when I contacted the community for support in protesting an eighty-foot cell tower that Bell Mobility was proposing on Northmount Dr. near 40th Avenue. In a community of bungalows, this height was the equivalent of an 8 storey building. Also, we already had three towers within a mile of this site. With cooperation in picketing the carwash site and circulating a petition, we successfully defeated the proposal. Later, I wanted to give something back, and I have sat on the board as the newsletter contact, ever since.

What benefit do you derive from participation in the Community?

I have gotten to know so many neighbours while working together on different initiatives, from setting up bridge classes to wine tastings. This forges a more meaningful sense of what community is.

Monthly time commitment?

We meet as a board 10 times a year, for 1 to 2 hours. Extra projects, such as helping with the AGM, or buying refreshments for an event might take another 8 or10 hours. I have enjoyed helping when I can, and if time does not allow and I am unable to help, I have never felt any pressure.

Why would I recommend that others participate?

Before I joined the board, I felt little connection to the larger community. I have since gained a voice in the month to month workings of the board and have gotten to know my fellow board members, as well as many residents. Seeing our community through the lens of others is an opportunity to appreciate what we have from multiple perspectives.

Please contact Daryl Connolly at president@cambrianheightscommunity.com for more information on how you can help. We have openings for board positions.

Participation Builds Your Community: An Interview with Susan MacGregor

What former Board member Susan MacGregor has to say about volunteering for the Community:

Why did you volunteer in Cambrian Heights?

The Board generously provides access to land by the hall for the use of the garden group. Partly in return, I joined the Board to provide general help and so that the members of the community garden could be represented. With the Board striving to increase the involvement of the community, I thought that the perspective of our gardening community might be different from others, and could assist.

What benefit do you derive from participation in the Community?

Broadly, through involvement in the monthly Board meetings I learned of upcoming events and issues in our community. This allowed me to participate in those of concern and interest to me; this has strengthened my commitment and feelings for the community. As a member of the garden group I have enjoyed more gardening, the vegetables I grew and made some new friends with similar interests.

Monthly time commitment?

The monthly Board meetings lasted 2 to 3 hours, with additional opportunities to help with Board-sponsored events and to lead the garden. The overall commitment varied depending on my interest and availability to participate in the special events. Coordinating the garden group was largely a summer activity that included ensuring that the plots were all being used, maintaining a membership and waiting list, and providing a conduit to and from the Board. On average, this took an hour or so a week.

Why would I recommend that others participate?

I would absolutely recommend that others participate in the community association, in whatever capacity they are able to do. For me, there are several reasons for saying this. The community has given me access to land to grow food when my garden at home is not suitable. Since I benefit, I believe that I also have a responsibility to give back. Being on the Board was an opportunity to meet neighbours, help others, learn, and to have some fun.

President’s Message – March 2019

March brings a hint of Spring coming combined with winter’s last blasts as thoughts turn towards baseball and soccer and increased daylight. At Cambrian Heights, we are adding events in March through June. Please see the updated upcoming events listing in the newsletter. The annual Polar Party in January was once again a great outdoor event for the family with great weather free ice skates provided and hot chocolate and music to entertain. For the second year, the Cambrian School Parents participated with a Chilli contest in addition to crafts plus a baked goods and pizza fundraiser inside the Hall.

On Saturday, February 9, a Volunteer Appreciation Night was held at the Community Hall. Over 24 previous volunteers and interested guests braved the cold temperatures and visited with Board members and enjoyed some games and glasses of wine with cheese, cakes and hot appetizers.

The value of volunteering cannot be over-emphasized and our appreciation to these Cambrian Heights residents warrants such a thank you. Please look to involve yourselves in future community activities and meet these neighbours. March’s event will be our first Cooking Class in the Hall’s now “commercial” kitchen facilities. All attendees (maximum 20) will benefit from Chef Don Turnbull’s 30- plus years of instructing the art of cooking for the family. Meals will be prepared, recipes provided, and wine served with the finished product including desert. We hope to have more of these classes in the future and anticipate our residents will take advantage of these practical cooking classes.

Future events include the Spring Wine Event in April featuring fresh whites, rosé and pinot noirs to taste along with fine cheeses and enhanced with wine knowledge and discounted sales provided by Highlander Wines & Spirits. In early May, we are hoping to host a Jane’s Walk focusing on our community park space and future usage. A community Spring Cleanup date in late May or early June has once again been planned in partnership with Rosemont Community. June will conclude our programs before summer with our Annual General Meeting. Attending this meeting remains a great way to find out what is happening in the Community, visit with existing directors and contribute ideas for future programs and events.

We continue to offer our weekly Yoga program or one of the three weekly exercise drop-in programs offered at the Hall in the early evening. Details of these programs may be found on our community website.

We added two new Board members in February, Sue Bromley and Kevin Outhet who have come forth based on our recent requests for volunteers to fulfil certain roles on the Board. We remain in need of a Casino and Social Director and of course welcome those wanting to contribute through joining the Board but holding no specific role. New volunteers with energy and ideas are always welcome. For more information please contact president@cambrianheightscommunity.com.

Our main fundraiser which supports the activities of the Community and maintenance of the Hall and grounds is our Casino, which this year will be at Calgary Casino on May 29 and 30. We are again looking for volunteers for daytime and evening shifts. A meal is provided and most find the social aspects of the volunteering much fun. Please contact Sonya (hnatiw13@shaw.ca) or Dan Vallee (danvallee@gmail.com) for more information.

The next meetings of the Board will take place on April 1 and May 6. All residents are welcome to attend. These meetings normally take place at the Georgina Thomson City building on 14th Street and Northmount Drive at 6:30 PM.

Remember: Participation Builds Your Community.

Polar Party 2019 was a success!

The Community Association held its 5th Annual Polar party on January 26 under partially sunny skies and perfect weather. An estimated 70-80 participants visited our two outdoor ice rinks over the 3-4 hours. Many young children took advantage of the free skates to experience ice skating for the first time while experienced skaters played hockey with parents, brothers, sisters and friends. The free hot chocolate and cider were once again popular as was the fire to warm up between activities. The City of Calgary provided two coordinators who helped out with all the events and even tied skates up for the many new Canadians who joined in the fun.
At the same time and for the 2nd year the Cambrian School Parents sponsored a fundraising event inside the Community Hall for the children of the school. They held a Chilli cook-off contest as well as providing indoor games and an extensive bake sale. The good weather allowed the bake sale to be partially moved outside for everyone on skates to access.
A great time was had by all and many thanks go out to Scott Jacobson and his ice crew along with the organizers of the event, Jodi Dixon for Cambrian Heights and Krista Steinke for the Cambrian School, and their volunteers.
